One Kid at a Time: Big Lessons from a Small School (Series on School Reform)

Average review score:

Excellent Book!
Any one interested in creating an education system that is child centered, flexible and interesting should read this book.
The Met, a public highschool in Providence, RI., is the focus of a 2 year study by the author that culminated in this book. This is a special place where real learning takes place and children are valued for their interests and their individualism.
It almost makes me want to go back to highschool or atleast move to Providence so that my children can go there. Thank you to the author, eliot Levine, and to everyone associated at the Met for being brave enough to go against the tide and create a school that will hopefully be the model for all schools in the future.

Pan-African Theology: Providence and the Legacies of the Ancestors
Published in Paperback by Africa World Press (April, 1992)
Author: Josiah Ulysses III Young
Average review score:

A remarkably nuanced work in Africana religious thought.
This is one of the freshest treatments of liberation theology in African-American thought. Drawing upon the insight of Edward Blyden--that you can change a people's theology but not their religion--Young issues a critique of Christological missiology (the "missionary" approach) to the salvation of black people across the globe. Young points to a distinction between "acculturation" (Africanization) and "incultruation" (Christianization) that requires fusion for a viable Pan-African theology. The task of a good theology, he argues, is to draw upon the cultural formations already present in the people and present a critical space for exchange. Key, in his view, is recognition of the racial, ethnic, and religious diversity of African peoples across the world. Particularly provocative about this study are (1) its discussion of Alexander Crummell and Edward Blyden, where their strengths and limitations are brought to the fore, (2) its discussion of James Cone's black theology and the changes it went through, and (3)its discussion of jazz as a spiritual music. The author's prose are beautiful without being preachy, and the every chapter offers a nugget of insight that the reader will find useful in any project to make thought more relevant to our times. I have written a long review of this work, which will appear in RELIGIOUS ETHICS some time this year. In sum, this is an important work by a thinker whose work, I am sure, will be among the most important contributions in Africana and liberation thought at the end of this century. I look forward to more work by Young. I recommend, to the reader, his recent work on Racism and Bonhoeffer. ----Lewis R. The people of Providence : a housing estate and some of its inhabitants
Published in Unknown Binding by Hutchinson ()
Author: Tony Parker
Average review score:

Review of the People of Providence
An incredible insight into the lives of some very ordinary working class people living in a South London housing estate the late seventies and early eighties. A series of around 40 interviews of people living in conditions which are difficult for much of "Middle England" to believe, let alone understand. The histories of these people, from the desperate and depressed ("An end sixteen floors below") to those delighted to be given the opportunities to live a life ("Love it, this little place"), are enough to make the reader cry and laugh, depending on the interview.

The way Tony Parker gets people to talk is incredible, and the unwinding of the people's lives over the series of interviews is both awful and totally compelling.

In an age where docu-soaps are all the rage on television, this book should still be in print. The written word acts a deeper record of the lives of these people than any screen could ever do, and the stories told are sufficient to deeply move the reader.

Anyone serious about understanding the behaviour of people in the UK, and the problems that the working (and not-working) classes face, must read this book. Whether Left-wing or Right-wing in outlook, the reader will be challenged and encouraged by this portrait of urban life in the latter half of the twentieth century

Providence

A Life Alone
Never before have I read a book that has spoken so deeply to my heart. It is a book about a lonely academic woman who longs for love. She is extremely successful in the world of academia, but cannot reconcile her intellectual life with her love life. She doesn't believe she can start her life until she has found a man to live with and she gets all self-worth from the affirmation of Maurice, the man she pines away for. She hates leaving work for an empty home everyday and all she wants is to be loved in such a way that even when parted from the other she would never be alone. After reading this book, a person is left to wonder about the plight of the single life. Many questions arise such as: Can a single person be happy, fulfilled? Can academia fill emotional voids? Where does a person get self-worth? "Providence" is a love story. It's about a love freely given, but clearly denied. What makes "Providence such a profound and intriguing book is that it mirrors the author's life. Anita Brookner sees her life as a disappointment, noting that she never had a family because she never left school. She was an only child with a Polish-Jewish background who grew up in London. This left her feeling alienated and alone. She noted herself as being one of the lonliest women in London. All of her life experiences carry over to "Providence," and because they do, the novel is frighteningly real. If you're looking for a good read, "Providence's" theme deals with what the whole human race longs for...love.

Providence
Published in Paperback by Preserving Christian Pubns (June, 1991)
Author: Garrigou
Average review score:

Classic work on God's creation and our response.
Arguably the best treatment of the Catholic doctrine of Providence: how God governs the world, to what purpose, and how we should respond. Rooted in Scripture and the teaching of St. Thomas Aquinas, this book offers solid doctrine, clearly expressed, to anyone seeking to discern and follow God's will. I try to read the fourth chapter every couple of years, where Garrigou-Lagrange explains when we should accept our circumstances, as coming from God, and when we should seek to change them. I recommend this book to all those who tend to worry too often and too much.

As a point of interest, Fr. Garrigou-Lagrange taught at the Angelicum in Rome from 1909 until 1960, and the future Pope John-Paul II was one of his students.

This new author's style of writing captures the mind's eye. It is very easy to invision each character, and Ms. Noland's attention to detail is unsurpassed. This author knows her subject, and her passion shows through. Would love to see a prequel or sequel to this book!

A must Read!
Normally I don't read a lot of books outside of Science fiction and Romance. But I read this book when I was 15 and absolutely loved it. Now 10 years later I found the book when I was cleaning my basement. It is still a wonderful book. If you think that historical books are boring, think again. This book is exciting, with a hint of romance and a dash of voodoo to spice the whole book up. A must read if you are looking for a book in historical fiction to start out with.

Providence Island, 1630-1641 : The Other Puritan Colony
Published in Paperback by Cambridge University Press (October, 1995)
Author: Karen Ordahl Kupperman
Average review score:

Outstanding work of original research
This work by Karen Ordahl Kupperman should be required reading for anyone interested in the roots of english "civilization" in the Americas. Kupperman pulls out of the dustbin of the archives the intriguing story of Providence Island, off the coast of central america & in the midst of then-powerful spanish colonies, to elucidate the motives of the puritan founding fathers. By so doing, Kupperman adds greatly to our often stereotyped insights about the differences between the "US" colonies (most notably, Massachusetts & Virginia), and the influence of environment, composition of migrants, & support from the home island. Kupperman also brought to my attention, for the first time in so bold a way, the hooks between the puritan founding class & the englishman who overthrew Charles I & involved themselves, in one way or another, in the administration of Cromwell.
